Professor Miller received his Sc.B. in biology (1983) from Brown University, and his Ph.D. in biochemistry/bioorganic chemistry (1988) from Rockefeller University under the direction of the late Professor E.T. Kaiser. His graduate work focused on active site-directed affinity labeling of protein kinases, and on the substrate specificity of Ser/Thr- and Tyr-kinases. From 1988 to 1991 he was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Paul Schimmel in the Department of Biology at MIT, where he carried out structure-function studies of Ala-tRNA synthetase. In 1991 he joined the faculty of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Stony Brook as an Assistant Professor. He became Associate Professor in 1997 and Full Professor in 2003.
